Token Cost Attribution in Multi-Agent AI Systems
Abstract
As agentic AI systems mature from conversational assistants into multi-step, tool-using orchestrators, the cost structures of running them diverge significantly from simple token arithmetic. This paper presents a root-cause analysis of token cost inflation observed after deploying a structured multi-agent orchestration plugin (Superpowers for Claude Code) into a production development workflow. We identify four distinct cost drivers — the subagent cascade, mandatory plugin initialization overhead, static context persistence, and model selection multipliers — and provide a ranked remediation framework with expected impact estimates. The methodology generalizes to any team running agentic AI workflows with third-party orchestration tooling.
Key Findings
- 191% increase in tool calls (0.17 → 0.56 tool/message ratio) after deploying a multi-agent orchestration layer, with message volume decreasing — confirming that cost inflation is structural, not volumetric.
- Subagent cascade is the primary driver. Each user action can spawn 3–6 subagents, each loading its own full context window. A single “implement this feature” request generated 847 tool calls across 9 subagents in one observed session.
- Plugin initialization overhead is fixed and unavoidable. Skill loading at session start consumed ~12,000 tokens per session on average — a base cost that accrues regardless of task complexity.
- Model selection multipliers compound all other factors. Using Opus 4 for subagents instead of Sonnet 4 multiplies cost 5× per token; using Haiku 4.5 for classification subtasks reduces it 20×. Model selection is the highest-leverage optimization available.
- A ranked remediation framework (model downgrade → context scoping → task batching → cache warming) reduces projected costs by 60–75% when applied together, recoverable without changing the orchestration architecture.
